I have been doing nursing clinicals at Christian Hospital N. E. (CNE) in St. Louis, MO where I’ve discovered the biggest, tastiest veggie burger I’ve ever had in their cafeteria! (Yes, I was very surprised, too!)

Happy National Sandwich Day! I am a major fan of sandwiches, so this day is far more important to me than Halloween was. Sorry Halloween fans, deal with it. You like candy and alcohol, I guess. I like sandwiches.
Anyways, I decided to really go all out and celebrate this occasion by treating myself to something I’ve wanted for a long time: The Plant Burger. The Plant Cafe is a healthy and affordable (paraphrasing the website, it’s not cheap or anything) organic restaurant with three locations in and around SF. Maybe 4, because I don’t think the website mentioned the new outpost in SFO’s T2. Anyways, The Plant Burger is on every list of vegetarian food items you have to eat in San Francisco, and since I like to eat not-meat and I also like to read, I am quite familiar with those lists (of which there are many). For no reason other than sheer laziness (The Plant Cafe downtown is a whopping 5 blocks from my office) I had yet to try this delicacy, but today, in honor of the occasion, I went for it. (Note: I did get caught in the rain on my way there, which was a) not that bad and b) solid justification for never having gone before.)
So, here it is: The Plant Burger, which is a delicious patty made of beets and lentils and mushrooms and other stuff, topped with a super yummy and thick tomato sauce/paste (The Noodle, who is a major tomato paste fan, would love this). I opted for the California, which comes with melted cheddar and avocado on top.
Now, I know that this picture is what you would call ‘low quality’, but let me assure you that the same can not be said of the burger. Normally I like my veggie b’s firm and chewy, so as to mimic the texture of real meat. This patty, however, is dense, mushy, a little bit crunchy on the edges, and it is so amazing that I have basically had to rethink my entire burger philosophy. Haha, no, not really, that would be drastic. But I will say that this texture works for this burger. The flavors are so wonderful, and even though it is massive and cheesy, you still feel like you are treating yourself to something healthy and energizing with every single bite. I ate this more slowly than I’ve ever eaten lunch (and I am an avowed slow eater), so as to savor every single healthy and energizing bite.
So, that’s a good review, right? If you live in and around San Francisco, or you’re flying in or out on Virgin America, holler at a Plant Burger and enjoy yourself some goodness.

My Favorite in Brooklyn
My wife and I both love the veggie burger at Bonnie’s on 5th Avenue in park slope. They do cook it on the same grill as the meat burgers — but that doesn’t bother us (enough to outweigh the amazing burger).
It’s spicy and has a great texture. Doesn’t try to be a meat burger and doesn’t fall apart. Also, it’s big.
Fries are also excellent. Only complaint is the lack of sweet potato fries.
